Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos
“Softening our wicked hearts, O Mother of God, and quenching the wrath of those who hate us, resolve every sorrow of our souls, for we gaze upon your Holy image. By your sufferings and mercy for us, we are moved, and we kiss your wounds; but the arrows that pierce us fill us with dread.
Do not allow us, Merciful Mother, to perish in our cruelty and in the cruelty of our neighbors. Truly, you are the softening of evil hearts.
Amen.”
The icon “Seven-Arrows” meaning
In the icon of the Mother of God “Seven-Arrows,” the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted pierced by seven arrows, often depicted as swords. This iconography was created based on the words of the righteous Simeon, which he spoke in the Jerusalem Temple when the Most Holy Theotokos and the righteous Joseph brought the Newborn Christ there on the fortieth day after His Nativity:
Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against.” And when he turned to the Most Holy Virgin, he prophesied: “Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
The seven arrows or swords piercing her body are an image of the sorrow of the Virgin Mary, who witnessed the suffering of her Son. Symbolically, the seven arrows also represent the seven deadly sins of humanity, which bring new sorrows to the Mother of God.
People pray before this icon, seeking healing from heart ailments and reconciliation among those who are in conflict with each other.
