The Lord’s Prayer

“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:9)

“The Lord’s Prayer,” also known as the “Our Father,” is the main prayer in Christianity. This prayer was given by Jesus Christ Himself and is recorded in the New Testament of the Bible.

Once, Jesus Christ gave this prayer to His disciples. The Apostle Luke recounted that when Jesus prayed and finished, one of His disciples said to Him:

“Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)

And then Jesus taught His disciples how to pray correctly. It was the Lord’s Prayer.

The Sermon on the Mount by Jesus Christ

Once on a clear spring day, with a gentle breeze carrying the coolness from the Sea of Galilee, on the slopes of a mountain covered with greenery and flowers, the Lord, surrounded by a dense crowd of people, gave to the people the New Covenant of Love.

This happened after Jesus Christ had chosen His apostles and descended with them from the mountaintop to stand on level ground. Here, His disciples and a multitude of people, gathered from all around the land of Judea and its neighboring regions, were already waiting for Him. They had come to listen to Him and receive healing from their afflictions. Everyone sought to touch the Savior because a great power emanated from Him, capable of healing all.

Seeing the multitude of people before Him, Jesus Christ ascended the mountain and sat down to teach the people. He began by explaining what His disciples should be like, how they should fulfill God’s Law to attain blessedness (meaning a higher degree of happiness and eternal life) in the Kingdom of Heaven. He gave nine blessings. Then the Lord provided teachings about Divine Providence, refraining from judging others, the power of prayer, giving alms, and much more. This sermon of Jesus Christ is known as the Sermon on the Mount.

Life testimony

I want to tell you, my friends, about another life testimony shared by my father. It was in 1997. I had just finished school and was planning to enter university. My father was getting ready to go abroad for work. He had obtained a work visa and was packing his bags for the journey.

Before leaving, he prayed in front of an old icon that was in a wooden frame under glass and hung in the corner of the room. My father asked God for help, to be with him during these difficult times. The time had come to leave. Before exiting the house, my father wanted to take one last look at the icon and then leave. As he turned around, he saw the image of Jesus, which appeared on the white wall next to the icon.

As my father described it, the image of Jesus appeared in a white circle of radiance, so bright that he had to squint his eyes because the radiance was so strong. It was pure white, much brighter than the whitewashed wall of the house. My father said that the face of Jesus was kind, and there was even a slight smile. The holy image of Jesus was etched into my father’s memory, and he remembered it forever.

He went on his trip, but now with a light heart because he was confident that God had heard his prayers. Indeed, my father’s journey was successful and went smoothly. Later, he traveled to Moscow for work several more times, and everything always went well. Even when circumstances seemed to be against him and sometimes even posed a danger to his health, everything always ended well. His coworkers sometimes couldn’t understand how my father remained so calm and always resolved conflicts peacefully.

This is a true life testimony that God is alive! He hears each one of us. Remember this and pray from the bottom of your heart; God will surely provide comfort, just trust in Him.
